The second 2013 issue of South as a State of Mind was built around "arcadia" — not as fantasy or escape, but as a temporary, communal state of renewal during a time of crisis. Shaped by a summer on the island of Anafi, the issue proposed carrying the polis into a simpler, more sensuous world: togetherness, nature, and reduced material needs as a fleeting but meaningful alternative.
My contribution followed the climb to the island's Kalamiotissa monastery — a journey that became a way of thinking through pilgrimage, faith, and what it means to move toward something absolute. On Anafi, nature, memory, ritual, and belief collapse into one another. The island itself starts to feel sacred, a place where landscape, myth, and devotion become indistinguishable from transcendence.
