Mamula Island Hotel Art Program & Residency

At Balkan…Projects, we have been collaborated with private partners to translate place, heritage, and brand identity into contemporary cultural programming. We have developed projects that bring a site’s distinctive character into focus through artists’ eyes and carefully tailored, curated experiences.

A key example of this consultancy was Mamula Island Hotel’s invitation in 2023 to enrich through art a 19th-century Austro-Hungarian fort in Montenegro’s Boka Bay, recently tranformed into as a luxury hotel. In response, we proposed an artist residency, an evolving exhibition, and a summer-long programme of talks and performances that sought to generate new readings of the site, address its unique and, for many, charged history, and redefine its new function with respect to the local community and historical memory.

In close dialogue with the partner team, I developed the curatorial framework that foregrounded contemporary culture from the Balkans and fostered exchange between regional and international audiences. I invited Irena Haiduk, Milica Janković, Angelo Plessas, and Ana Prvački to respond to the island’s layered histories through public moments and sensorial encounters—activating nature, architecture, ritual, hospitality, sound, and craft, and encouraging visitors to listen, smell, touch, savour, contemplate, and meditate.
